An older HP laptop showed up that was not outputting any sound. It did not recognize any audio capabilities at all. It is unusual for something to simply stop working from one day to the next, but not unheard of.
This one seemed an easy call – a bad audio driver. For whatever reason, it either became uninstalled or corrupted. Easy-peasy, right? Wrong.
Nothing is ever cut and dry with computers. Removing the audio device in the Device Manager and having Windows detect it and reinstall did not fix it. Doing Windows updates, a BIOS update, and getting everything in tip-top shape did nothing. Manually going out and downloading Windows 11 audio drivers did not do the trick either. The speakers did work – confirmed by beeps in the BIOS. What to do?
Once the “new” audio driver was installed, there were no errors in the Device Manager, but that didn’t mean it was working. Well, a trip to YouTube verified things were in working order. To be completely thorough, a reboot was performed to make sure things stayed working. Success!
What can we takeaway from this case? Don’t always assume that the latest and greatest drivers will always be the solution. You can spend a long time going down the wrong path. Now that this issue is known, we can file this away for the next time a laptop presents with a mystery driver issue.
